Moissanite should be called Moissan or "carbon silica", and in its subsequent introduction to the international market as a "moissanite diamond", it is very similar in appearance to a diamond and is the closest gemstone in terms of physical properties, which is difficult to distinguish with the naked eye, and can be checked accidentally with some diamond testing equipment. Some diamond testing equipment can also pass accidental inspection.
Since 1998, a number of domestic publications have reported the emergence on the jewellery market of a new type of diamond imitation, a synthetic gemstone product with characteristics so similar in appearance to diamonds that it cannot be distinguished from them by a thermal conductivity meter: synthetic carbon silica, a new generation of diamond imitation material. Some literature refers to it as "lab moissanite", "synthetic silicon carbide", "silicon carbide", etc.
Moissanite is an ore with a dispersion of 0.104 greater than that of diamonds (0.044), a refractive index of 2.65-2.69 (2.42 for diamonds), the same diamond-like diamond lustre and a stronger 'fire' colour, closer to diamonds than any imitation. Most moissanite is synthetic, natural moissanite is very rare, occurring only in meteorite craters, and its colour is mostly dark green and black.
