   A lab-grown diamond is also known as a created diamond or a man-made diamond. Laboratory production prevents the negative effects of mining on the environment or humans.

   Diamonds grown in a lab are physically identical to diamonds mined in the field. There is only one difference between the two: their point of origin.

   Diamonds created in a lab follow the same growth process as diamonds mined from the ground. After forming as carbon atoms under intense pressure and high temperatures, they bond together to form crystalline lattices. To achieve maximum brilliance, they are cut and polished after they are fully formed. Colors and clarity grades of lab-grown diamonds are similar to those of mined diamonds.

  Natural diamonds have the same physical and chemical characteristics as lab grown diamond, both being three-dimensional crystalline minerals formed from the element carbon, the main difference being the way in which they are formed. Natural diamonds grow hundreds of kilometres from the surface in the high-temperature, high-pressure lower mantle, and take millions of years of crustal movement to reach the surface of the earth in volcanic eruptions before becoming a mineable mineral, whereas lab grown diamond are formed in a matter of weeks in a human-cultivated environment. The physical and chemical properties of the finished cultivated diamond are not dissimilar to those of a natural diamond.

  The production process for lab grown diamond has become more mature and offers advantages in terms of quality and cost effectiveness compared to natural diamonds. Lab grown diamond have an advantage over natural diamonds in terms of average quality, as they are usually classified as types Ia, Ib, IIa and IIb, depending on the level of inclusions. Type IIb diamonds contain boron and therefore exhibit a blue colour and are extremely rare in their natural environment. Currently the majority of lab grown diamond from head producers are Type IIa, with only 2% of natural diamonds being of this type. At the downstream retail end, the majority of lab grown diamond are D-F in colour, while the majority of natural diamonds are G-I in colour.
