The initials MQ stand for modern quarter cut, an octagonal mixed cut for corundum. MQ combines two rectangular and two triangular faces arranged in parallel rows. The cropped corners create the illusion of greater spread than a typical square cut. MQ enhances color with its eight symmetrical, lively facets. The orderly steplike rows provide excellent light return. First developed in the 1960s, the MQ cut remains modern and eye-catching. For sapphires in particular, the MQ shape shows off the desirable “cornflower blue” tone. MQ corundum makes an exciting solitaire or fashionable stackable ring.
