  This is a question worth considering, as science and technology now give us the option of buying diamonds created artificially. In laboratories around the world, from Germany to China, men and women in white coats are re-creating the exact same conditions that transformed carbon into diamonds millions of years ago.

  Not to be confused with cubic zirconia or rhinestones, lab created diamonds are real and have the same optical and gemological properties as mined diamonds. Even trained gemologists are sometimes unable to tell the difference.

  A mecca for emerging technologies, Silicon Valley has been one of the first places to really invest in lab grown diamond creation. Attracting at least the most famous investors, including Leonardo DiCaprio - Diamond Foundry - consumers are trying to change the perception of lab grown diamonds through clever marketing focused on the ethical advantages of lab grown diamonds (no mining, a clear supply chain).

  "If you ask people in the abstract whether they would buy a synthetic diamond, people are often reluctant," admits Martin Roscheisen, CEO of Diamond Foundry. "Man made lab grown diamonds are simply a better product. It's like organic in food."

  When consumers choose an engagement ring, jewellers don't want them to consider the grittier side of the romance. Anabela Chan, a jeweller in the glass-door boutique inside Soho's stylish Ham Yard Hotel, can guarantee that every diamond seen in her chic showcase is authentic and ethical. That's because every single one of them - from rich purple amethysts and sapphires to canary yellow diamonds and even black opals - has been grown in a laboratory.

  Very few clients do come to her for lab grown diamonds, but most fall in love with the designs first and then discover the source of the stones - and the delightful prices.

  "When you see the stones, you realise how beautiful they are," says her client, who mixes her pieces into collections featuring higher-priced mined gems. "There's no difference visually or in terms of value, and I think we're creating pieces that people like to wear as jewellery rather than put in a safe. Customers will feel comfortable wearing them and young people can afford the prices."

  "Some customers still want the glamour and romance of natural stones," says Alan Frampton, owner of Cred, however, many customers like to get all the beauty of a sparkling diamond without harming the environment and know that none are harmed in the process."

  Last year, Atelier Swarovski - the eponymous family that made its fortune in artificial sparkle - launched its own fine jewellery collection, featuring its signature crystals set next to lab grown diamonds. Some of the pieces worn by American Horror Story actress Emma Roberts on the red carpet at the 2017 Oscars were watershed moments that marked the importance of lab grown diamonds.
