whats a simulated diamond?

Diamonds, always associated with nobility and inaccessibility, are a turn-off for young people with moderate incomes. They are turning to cheaper, lab-grown synthetic diamonds.

What is the composition of a simulated diamond?

Simulated diamonds have carbon as their main component, but they are different from natural diamonds.

Composition of synthetic diamond

The main component of simulated diamond is carbon, but it is different from natural diamond. Synthetic diamonds are usually made from carbonaceous materials such as graphite, graphite powder or diamond micropowder, and are manufactured using high temperature and high pressure processes.

Unlike natural diamonds, the raw material for simulated diamonds is not necessarily pure carbon, and therefore has different physical and chemical properties.

Synthetic diamond manufacturing process

The manufacturing process of simulated diamond mainly includes two types: high-pressure, high-temperature method and chemical vapour deposition method.

In the high-pressure, high-temperature method, carbonaceous raw materials are placed in steel moulds, which gradually transform the raw materials into simulated diamond by means of high temperature and pressure.

The chemical vapour deposition method uses the principle of chemical reaction to deposit carbonaceous gases on the substrate to form artificial diamonds.

Whichever method is used, it requires high temperature and pressure, and the diamonds produced usually have good physical and chemical properties and are harder and more wear resistant than natural diamonds.

Synthetic diamond applications

Due to its good performance, simulated diamond is widely used in gemstones, tools, optical devices and other fields. Its hardness and wear resistance can even replace natural diamonds, making it a cost-effective, high-performance choice.

There are also igi diamond certification with professional certificates that can be purchased with confidence. Unlike natural diamonds, simulated diamonds are unlikely to become an investment, but are widely used in jewellery, tools, fancy watches with diamonds and more.

Another key reason for the rise of vvs diamond simulate is "sustainability".

Lower carbon emissions than natural diamonds, a key selling point for synthetic diamonds

The Wall Street Journal pointed out that simulated diamond and traditionally mined diamonds have the same chemical composition, but the former manufacturing process is more sustainable, not only does not involve child labour, illegal smuggling, will not become a "blood diamonds" when the process of production mechanism into the green energy, but also to obtain a green certificate, so that sustainable development of the more points.

According to a survey by the Baker Retailing Center at Penn State's Wharton School of Business, 75 per cent of Generation Z consumers say that when choosing an item, whether it is sustainable is more important than the brand itself, and 71 per cent are willing to pay more for sustainability.

Danish brand Pandora has tapped into this trend and is currently one of the most active in promoting rhinestones.

These simulated diamonds are cultivated with a lot of heat and pressure and therefore require a lot of energy.

To make the production process more sustainable, Pandora also uses renewable energy to produce the diamonds, which are set in gold and silver rings made from recycled materials, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the production process. Compared to 106.9 kg of carbon emissions per carat of natural diamonds produced, Pandora produces only 9.2 kg of carbon emissions per carat of simulated diamonds.
